Bex Rayner was ‘honoured’ to be named as one of the Young Players of the Season at the weekend as she shone during her debut campaign for the club.
The 20-year-old played a key role throughout the season for The Reds and she reflected on picking up the award.
Rayner said: “I was really honoured to win Young Player of the Season. It was a season where I just wanted to enjoy my football and that’s what I did.
“It allowed me to play some of my best football and I’m really happy to be recognised for it.”
Rayner was one of the two players in the Garibaldi to be named Young Player of the Season as defender Liv Cook shared the award with her, much to Rayner’s delight.
“To win the award alongside Liv made it special,” Rayner explained. “She’s a great mate of mine and has had an outstanding season so I couldn’t be happier to win the award with her.”
The influential midfielder joined the club last summer and she made an instant impact as she averaged a goal or an assist every game. Unfortunately, these stats won’t be counted going forward as the season was expunged due to the Covid-19 outbreak but Rayner says the past few months will be ones to remember for the side.
She said: “Obviously it’s hard to take that we won’t be finishing the season.
“Looking back, it’s been a great. We got off on a bad start but we worked hard to turn that around and went on to play some fantastic football.
“I think we are all very proud of what we showed as a team and we created a really strong bond together.”
With the team’s last game coming in May, Rayner is eager to get back to field with her teammates in the Garibaldi.
“The season ending how it did just motivates us to work harder and be ready for what next season has in store for us,” she said. "But for sure we will hit the ground running.
“We are all missing it a lot so I certainly can’t wait to be back.”
