Match preview: Notts County vs Nottingham Forest

21 November 2019

Nottingham Forest will hope that their Nottinghamshire County Cup tie away to Notts County development side won’t fall victim to the weather again on Sunday afternoon as they make the short trip across the city for the re-arranged fixture.

The Reds were meant to face The Lady Pies last Sunday but the weather played havoc and the game was postponed. Forest reserve side have already booked their place in the competition’s final four as they overcame Mansfield Town in extra-time. The Reds came from behind twice as a goal in the 88th minute saw the side force the tie into an extra 30 minutes of time. Goals from Georgia Gladwin and Annabel McKechnie in the first-half of extra-time saw Forest go ahead 4-2 and despite a late consolation goal from Mansfield The Reds held on for the win.

A 13-0 victory over Newark Town in the second round saw Forest draw their neighbours in the quarter finals and a win over Notts on Sunday will also see The Reds pick up their sixth consecutive win across all competitions.

Sunday will be the first time The Lady Pies have taken to the field in the competition this season and they’ll be looking to make their stamp on the cup. Along with Forest, the side received a bye in the first-round and their second-round opponents pulled out of their tie which saw Notts progress safely through to the quarter-finals.

Seven different Reds built up the goal-scoring party against Newark Town last month as they all contributed with goals to see the side through to the competitions’ last eight. Laura Dexter, Sianna Bennett and Mai Moncaster all found the back of the net for the first time in red and Georgia Hewitt netted only her second goal for the club with a fine solo strike. Moncaster rounded of her opening goal with another two to seal her hat-trick and she was joined by Helena Constantinou in hat-trick club as the youngster also netted three. Ellie Casper secured herself a brace within 60 seconds in the first-half as she took her cup goal scoring tally to four goals in three appearances across all cup competitions. Ashleigh Edwards bagged the side’s second brace of the afternoon after she opened the scoring after only three minutes.

Andy Cook will be looking to rotate his side to allow previous County Cup performers a chance to shine in the competition again. Philipa Davies is set to keep her place in between the sticks for the side’s County Cup campaign and will be looking to make it back to back clean sheets in the competition. Sophia Bonser may also make her second County Cup start of the season as she’ll look to build on her impressive performance against Burnley two weeks ago. The youngster was brought on as a second-half substitute and she played a solid 22 minutes as she helped The Reds secure a 1-0 victory and she’ll be hoping to replicate that performance if given the nod on Sunday.

The match will be played at Highfields Sports Complex (NG7 2PS) and kick-off is at 2pm.
