Lamouchi: We must adapt again

3 September 2020

Nottingham Forest head coach Sabri Lamouchi said his side must adapt to the new season quickly as the campaign gets underway at Barnsley on Saturday.

The Reds kick-off the 2020-21 season with a Carabao Cup tie at Oakwell and Lamouchi said his side must continue to tackle the challenges put before them in what has been a challenging 2020 so far.

He said: “2020 is a strange year. We adapted to the beginning of the season, we adapted before COVID-19, we adapted during lockdown and after for the restart and we will adapt again.

“I never find a reason or excuse about our mistakes, so I don’t want to find an excuse for the beginning of the season. On Saturday we have the Carabao Cup and it is a game we will go there to win, it is as simple as that.

“We know it will be a tough game, very difficult, and we know because not so long ago we played there.

“At the beginning of the season in September, we can play three games in a week but this is a Championship schedule. We have a lot of games to play, it is a very tough month and if you look later at November and December, it is so tough with nine games to play.

“We need to adapt the pre-season, adapt the preparation and adapt the squad to not be a big squad, but have the players to make the changes when it is necessary to make the changes.”

After the way last season ended, Lamouchi is keen to put that behind the team quickly and ensure there is no hangover as they go again for another gruelling season.

“We were all extremely disappointed,” he said. “It was tough but this is a new chapter now. I am just looking forward and I am very happy to be here again and to start the new season with the same project.

“We need to build again, to work hard again, be more consistent and learn from our mistakes. At the end, it was just our fault and nothing else. We need to control what we can control, on the pitch, around the pitch, before the game and after the game.

“The small details, I said from day one can make the difference and they did in the end and I just want to look forward.

“We stopped for two months, and after a bad finish the players had some short holidays, we have had short preparation and a short pre-season. We have had some movement and the movement is not finished, and the beginning is important.

“We need to build the same team with different players, different quality but with the same spirit at the end.”
