Nottingham Forest Under 23s moved three points clear at the top of the Professional Development League after a 1-0 win against Sheffield United on Friday.
A long-range strike from Rezart Rama just before the half-time whistle was enough to take all three points for Chris Cohen’s side.
The match started evenly with both sides looking to attack and take the early lead. The first real chance went to the visitors after David Parkhouse was given time to take aim just outside the area, forcing George Shelvey to make a diving save to his left-hand side.
Forest’s first chance came through Virgil Gomis after being set free by Brennan Johnson, however Gomis could only find the side netting. Another chance for The Reds in the first half came from a dangerous corner, whipped in by Johnson, the United keeper’ Jordan Amissah failed to catch the ball which then found Josh Barnes but his header glanced off the crossbar.
Forest broke the deadlock on the stroke of half-time through an unstoppable strike from Rama. The full-back found space on the right-hand side, 25 yards out from goal and as the ball found him, he unleashed his right foot and fired a fierce strike that drilled into the top left of Amissah's goal.
Forest came close to doubling their lead early in the second half through Gomis whose close range shot seemed goal bound but his effort was cleared on the line by a Sheffield Untied defender.
Sheffield United had a chance to level the game when Reece York beat the offside trap however his shot went wide of target and Forest were able to see out the remainder of the contest to get back on the winning trail following Monday's defeat at Wigan Athletic.
The Under 23s are next in action when they travel to Birmingham City in the Professional Development League on Friday 31st January (kick-off 1.30pm).
