Nottingham Forest Under 23s remain on top of the Professional Development League after a convincing 5-1 win against Barnsley.
A Will Swan brace was followed by further goals from Victor Sodiende, Alex Mighten and a trialist which helped wrap up a comfortable win at The Nigel Doughty Academy.
Barnsley started the brighter of the two teams and could have taken the lead in the first two minutes if not for a great save from Marios Siampanis at his near post.
Forest scored their first goal of the afternoon in the ninth minute from a Swan header, as he flicked in a cross from Keith Asare and beat the Barnsley goalkeeper, Josh Rae, who came rushing out in an attempt to catch the ball.
Forest kept the pressure on Barnsley as Asare found space on the edge of the box and curled an effort goalwards, but the ball flew narrowly wide of the far post.
The Reds doubled the lead after some great play down the right-hand side as the trialist played the ball inside to Josh Barnes, with the return ball putting him through one-onone, and he fired a terrific finish past Rae.
The visitors managed to pull one back in the 50th minute through Elliot Simoes after he squeezed in a shot from close range after a series of chances for the visitors.
Swan restored Forest's two-goal lead through a penalty after Sodiende was brought down by Rae. The striker smashed it straight down the middle as the keeper dived to his right.
Forest added some gloss to the scoreline late on as Sodiende capped a swift counter-attack, as he cut in on to his right foot to bend one into the top right corner before Mighten made it five with a low finish after Swan cut it back to him inside the penalty area.
The Under 23s are next in action as they begin their Premier League Cup group stage campaign with a trip to Bournemouth on Saturday 5th October (kick-off 11am).
