Nottingham Forest Under 18s moved up to second in the Professional Development League after they secured a well-fought 4-1 victory against Leeds United.
Goals from a trialist (2) and Alex Gibson-Hammond put Gareth Holmes’ side into a commanding half-time lead before they were pegged back by Nickolas Haugland's early second-half effort.
However the three-goal advantage was restored in the 90th minute as Kyle McAdam's sensational strike put the game out of Leeds' reach.
The visitors made the brighter start at The Nigel Doughty Academy and enjoyed the majority of the possession during the opening exchanges but found themselves behind just before the tenth minute.
Neat interplay between Gibson-Hammond and Detlef Esapa Osong created the opening for the trialist and he was in a good position to bury a low shot beneath Matthew Turner.
Forest grew in confidence after their opening goal and were soon rewarded with a second. The trialist found space on the edge of the area before sending a bouncing effort goalwards which squirmed over Turner and into the net.
Silvio Bello was influential in Forest’s third as he drove inside and found Gibson-Hammond, who took one touch and fired a left-footed shot beyond Turner to put The Reds three goals to the good at half-time.
Leeds reduced the deficit eight minutes into the second half as substitute Josh Galloway’s crossfield pass found Haugland and he fired the ball beyond Michael Statham in the Forest goal.
Chances fell for Leeds duo Hogan Kenneh and Cole Gibboh but Forest had the final say as they broke forward late on and substitute McAdam found space on the right-hand side and lashed a fine finish into the roof of the net.
Holmes’ side return to action on Tuesday afternoon when they face Colchester United at The Nigel Doughty Academy (kick-off 12pm) as they look to secure back-to-back victories for the first time this season.
