Under 23s: Bournemouth 1-0 Forest

6 October 2019

Nottingham Forest Under 23s began their Premier League Cup campaign with a defeat against Bournemouth on Saturday.

The Reds fell to a 1-0 defeat at the Vitality Stadium in their first group match as Alex Dobre's first-half strike proved decisive on the south coast, with Forest being denied several times and missing a penalty.

It could have been the perfect start for The Reds as they were awarded a penalty inside seven minutes after Alex Mighten was brought down, but Zach Clough missed the target from 12 yards.

Brennan Johnson curled a free kick over the bar shortly afterwards before Jaidon Anthony had a goal disallowed and Gavin Kilkenny fired wide as the hosts started coming into the game. On 36 minutes they took the lead as Dobre sent a low strike into the bottom corner of the net from the edge of the area.

The Reds responded well to going behind as Yassine En-Neyah and Mighten forced Mark Travers into two smart saves either side of the interval, before Clough came close twice in quick succession with the Bournemouth stopper preserving their lead.

As the game wore on, Forest pushed forward and that left gaps at the back with Marios Siampanis called into action to keep out Anthony’s free kick on 77 and the Greek goalkeeper saving Jake Scrimshaw’s penalty with two minutes remaining.

But despite their endeavours, Forest ended up defeated in their opening Premier League Cup group match.
