Nottingham Forest Under 18s kept pace with the Professional Development League leaders Wigan Athletic after 1-0 win against Sheffield Wednesday at Nigel Doughty Academy on Saturday.
A penalty from Elliot Andrew just after the hour mark was enough to secure all three points for Gareth Holmes’ side.
Forest started the match with great intensity and enjoyed the majority of the possession in the early stages of the game but Sheffield Wednesday created the better chances to take the lead.
Paulo Aguas did well to pick out a cross from the left-hand side which found Charles Hagan at the back post but his header was tipped on to the bar by Nykah Liburd-Hines before being cleared by Tuwanda Mutoti. Liburd-Hines made another great save just minutes later with Aguas involved once more, saving well from a driven effort.
Despite a lack of clear-cut opportunities in the first half, Forest could have gone in at half-time in the lead through Andrew. The striker forced Luke Jackson to make a great save after being put through on goal by the trialist.
A piece of brilliance from Detlef Esapa-Osong, who weaved his way in to the box with quick feet and beat three players, led to the penalty being given. Andrew stepped up to take the spot-kick and he fired his effort straight down the middle and sent the goalkeeper the wrong way.
The Reds almost got their second of the match minutes later when the influential Osong showed off his quick feet once more before finding Kyle McAdam on the edge of the box, and although he sliced his shot wide of the goal it wasn't to matter as Forest held on for victory.
The Under 18s are next in action when they play Sheffield United at the Nigel Doughty Academy on Saturday 19th October (kick-off 11am).
