A professional performance

6 May 2019

Nottingham Forest midfielder Ryan Yates was happy to end the season with three straight wins after their 1-0 win over Bolton Wanderers at The City Ground this afternoon.

The Reds have struggled for consistency this season and Yates believes it is something that they can build on next season.

Speaking after the game, he said: "Today we got the win to make it three in a row which is obviously the main thing. I thought it was a professional performance and although we lacked some quality it is obviously something to build on for next season.

"The lads were just saying we need to be professional and just get the job done and we did. We got the goal early and we didn't know whether to stick or twist and go for more but then be more open at the back. At the end of the day we got the job done."

Martin O'Neill's side have finished the season in 9th place after the win today, eight points off the play-offs, and Yates assessed the campaign.

"It is a decent win to end the season," he said. "It is all about winning; obviously we fell short this season, we wanted to get in the play-offs and we are all so disappointed but it is something to build on next season.

"If you look back there is a few games against the lower teams in the division where we have dropped points and come away and look back now at the end of the season and think if we could just be a little bit more consistent and just maybe grind a couple of them results out."

Yates became a key figure in the Forest side from January onwards and has gone from strength to strength, admitting that is a strange way to end the campaign for him.

He said: "It is a strange one. The lads have said that it has been a long, tough season and it's just been like the first half of the season for me.

"I just want to keep improving, I feel like I have got so much more to give. The end of the season has come at a bad time for me but I will just have to rest up and be ready to go again in pre-season.

"The main aim is obviously going to be to get promoted next year and obviously I just want to come back in the best shape I can and try and keep my shirt and play for this club."
