A goal five minutes from time ensured that Nottingham Forest Under 23s fell to defeat in their pre-season friendly against Mansfield Town.
Jason Cummings had give The Reds a 10th-minute lead but an own goal by Ethan Stewart levelled things up before Nicky Maynard struck to decide the contest.
The Reds started the game positively and took the lead on 10 minutes through Cummings. Daryl Murphy saw his first effort saved by Mansfield keeper Aidan Stone, with his second effort being diverted over the line by Cummings.
Forest were in charge of proceedings, with Murphy almost latching onto a Gboly Ariyibi cross just before the half-hour mark, but a slice of luck for the hosts turned the game in their favour.
Mal Benning’s delivery from the left was a dangerous one and Ethan Stewart was the unlucky man in the middle for Forest as the ball diverted off his legs and past Jordan Smith to level the game.
Two minutes later and Smith was called into action to divert a fizzing Jacob Mellis strike over the bar as the two sides went into the break on level terms.
Jimmy Gilligan made six changes at the break as he rotated the side, with those changes seeing a slow start to the second half. It was the hosts who had the best of the chances in the second period, with Mellis shooting straight at Smith, Alex MacDonald volleying wide and Benning’s shot being saved by Smith as they went in search of the winner against the young Reds.
It could have been Forest who found the decisive goal, however, as subs Virgil Gomis and Will Swan linked up well on 77 minutes with the latter denied by a save from close range by Stone.
But on 84 that key moment came and it was the League Two side who took it as Nicky Maynard got on the end of CJ Hamilton’s cross to produce a composed finish as Mansfield secured the victory.
