Under 23s: Bolton 3-2 Forest

8 January 2019

Nottingham Forest Under 23s fell to defeat at the hands of Bolton Wanderers in the Professional Development League on Monday night at the Leyland County Ground.

The Reds threw away a 2-1 lead in the second half against a Bolton side who were reduced to ten men before the break.

Alex Iacovitti put Jimmy Gilligan’s side into the lead before Bolton levelled, but Brennan Johnson’s penalty put Forest back in front as The Trotters played the remainder of the game with a man less, though it didn’t stop them from scoring two more to secure all three points.

Forest began the contest well, seeing much of the ball in the opening stages, but failed to create any clear-cut chances. Reds midfielder Yassine En-Neyah was shown a yellow card on the half hour mark, five minutes before they took the lead.

A well-worked corner routine opened up the Bolton defence for the first time on 35 minutes as the ball was fizzed across goal, where Iacovitti was on hand to tap the ball home at the back post. The Reds were in the ascendancy following the goal and midfielder Jake Taylor nearly made it two when his shot went narrowly wide of the post.

However, The Trotters equalised against the run of play on the brink of half time through Jack Earing. The Bolton man took on the shot and lashed an effort goal-wards which flew into the bottom left-hand corner past Liam Bossin.

Forest were quick out of the blocks in the second-half when En-Neyah was brought down inside the box, as the referee pointed to the spot and brandished a red card to Bolton defender Jordan Boon. Johnson stepped up to take the penalty and coolly converted it to put The Reds back into the lead. En-Neyah was then replaced by Virgil Gomis on 54 minutes.

Bolton stepped it up a gear after going down to ten men and that showed when Christopher David scored a stunning equaliser. The midfielder brought the ball forward, turned and curled a long-range effort into the top left-hand corner which bounced off the post and into the net.

Idris Kadded and Joe Coveney were then replaced by Owen Gallacher and Kieran Hayes as The Reds searched for a goal to put them back into the lead, but it was the visitors who scored what would be the winner. A shot deflected into the path of Bolton captain Joe Pritchard who tapped home from close range.

Virgil Gomis did have the ball in the back of the net for Forest on 87 minutes, but it was disallowed when the linesman had his flag up for offside in what became a frustrating evening for Jimmy Gilligan’s side who slipped to defeat.
