Nottingham Forest Under 23s began their Professional Development League campaign with a superb 3-1 win over Bristol City at Ashton Gate.
Goals from Brennan Johnson (2) and Tyrese Fornah were enough to earn all three points for Jimmy Gilligan's side as they kicked off the season in style.
Forest had the chance to take a first-half lead when Alex Mighten was bundled over inside the penalty area but Robins goalkeeper Lochlan Robertson made an excellent save from Johnson's spot-kick to ensure it was goalless at the break.
It turned out to be the home side who would hit the front five minutes into the second half as Freddie Hinds steered Jonny Smith's cross into the net from close range but Forest struck back straight away when Johnson fired the ball low past Robertson.
Johnson was playing with real confidence and put The Reds in front on 62 minutes. Having worked himself into a decent position inside the penalty area, he kept his head down and struck a sweet, low effort into the corner of the net.
City put the pressure on as they attempted to find an equaliser but Fornah killed the game off with a minute to play as he found the net with a long-range stunner to give Forest the ideal start to their new campaign.
The Reds are next in action as they entertain Queens Park Rangers at The City Ground on Tuesday (20th August, kick-off 1pm) and entry is free to all supporters.
