English football legend Sir Bobby Charlton has thrown his support behind the Game of Remembrance set to take place at The City Ground next month.
The home of Nottingham Forest will play host to a match between the British Army Football Association and the German Bundeswehr (Armed Forces) on Thursday 8th November to mark the centenary of the Armistice Day.
And Sir Bobby has backed the event which pays tribute to the men and women who served in the First World War.
He said: “I’ve played the game and worked with so many footballers over the years, but none could make me prouder than the men and women footballers who served the Great War effort 100 years ago.”
The Games of Remembrance have been taking place since 2014 and see troops from the British Army Football Association take on the German Bundeswehr to commemorate all the soldiers who made the ultimate sacrifice during the First World War.
The announcement comes on Sir Bobby Charlton's birthday and one of the organisers and the Chairman of Army Football, General Mitch Mitchell, said: “It’s a massive privilege to have the support of a footballing legend like Sir Bobby Charlton for the Games of Remembrance, and what’s more, he has given us permission to use some photographs of when he met the British Army Football Team to help promote the Games.”
Explaining the gesture, Sir Bobby added: “I’m honoured to support the Games of Remembrance. Look behind the photos, be surprised what you find out; and join the Games on 8th November.”
Both Nottinghamshire clubs will host football games on Thursday 8th November. The men's match will take place at 7pm at The City Ground with Notts County hosting the women's match at Meadow Lane, kick-off at midday.
Entry for two adults and two children costs just £10. There is a £2.50 concession price to both matches for any uniformed services, under 16s, students and senior citizens.
