Tendayi Darikwa said that Nottingham Forest have proved they can compete with the best teams in the division and there is no reason why they can’t be challengers at the top of the Championship.
The Reds welcome league leaders Sheffield United to The City Ground on Saturday and Darikwa says the team have the belief to come away with all three points.
He said: "It is an open league this season, there isn't a stand-out performer as such. There are a lot of good teams with good players, but so have we so we need to throw ourselves into the mix and have the belief that we can be the best team in the division.
"There is no reason why we can't be. We have quality players, we have strength in depth and a good manager. We have got great support and a good fan base and stuff like that; it is about us being positive and a bit more consistency in our performances will bring results as well."
He added: "We have shown that we can mix it with the best teams in the division. The Middlesbrough game, we went up there and scored two goals against a team who don't concede many, and we left with a clean sheet as well which was a big plus.
"We all know what happened in the game last week which was a bit of a kick in the teeth but that was out of our control.
"In the supposed big games this season, we have done well. It is the games when we are expected to win from the outside that we haven't done our best and that is something we need to look at and hopefully we can change that."
Darikwa is expecting a difficult match against Chris Wilder's side but said that the focus is on Forest and what they can do.
He said: "It will be a tough game; they are where they are for a reason. They have a lot of good players and they like to attack so I think it will be quite an open game.
"But it is about us doing what we are good at. On the day it will be another full house here, I am sure Sheffield will sell out their end too but it is about us and doing what we do best."
