A disappointing evening at The City Ground saw Nottingham Forest fall to a 3-0 defeat against Preston North End.
A first-half Billy Bodin strike was added to in the second half by Tom Barkhuizen and Daniel Johnson to compound a miserable evening for The Reds.
Aitor Karanka made four changes to the side beaten by Hull City in the Emirates FA Cup on the weekend, with Tendayi Darikwa, David Vaughan, Barrie McKay and Apostolos Vellios all coming into the starting line-up.
The Reds started positively and carved out a couple of early openings. On six minutes a sharp break following a Preston long throw-in saw McKay feed Ben Osborn down the left, but the midfielder's low cross was cut out before Vellios could convert.
The Greek striker, making his first league start of the season, then had another effort on nine minutes after some good work by Matty Cash but could only bend his effort over Declan Rudd's crossbar.
Despite Forest's attacking pressure, they couldn't find a breakthrough and had to be aware of Preston's threat on the break as Paul Gallagher curled an effort narrowly wide of the post on 21 with Jordan Smith beaten.
The Reds were pressing the visitors high up the pitch and forcing them into mistakes and an unlikely source almost found the breakthrough on 27, with captain Michael Mancienne rising highest at a corner to head just wide.
But a defensive mix-up on 35 gifted Preston the lead as Bodin capitalised on an error by Mancienne to race through on goal and prod past Smith.
The Reds came out in the second half and weren't at the races as Preston looked more likely to find the next goal and it came on the hour mark. A corner into the box by Gallagher was met by the run of Barkhuizen and he glanced a header into the far corner of the net.
The winger almost found his second and Preston's third goal on 64 as he raced past Darikwa and bent an effort towards the top corner, but Smith was equal to it to parry the ball and keep Forest in the game.
Things went from bad to worse for The Reds on 82 as the third goal did arrive after Mancienne hauled down Bodin in the area. Substitute Johnson to stepped up to send Smith the wrong way from the penalty spot and put the seal on a disappointing night on Trentside.
