Forest 1-1 Bury (10-9 on pens)

14 August 2018

Nottingham Forest progressed to the second round of the Carabao Cup as they came out on top in a mammoth penalty shoot-out against Bury.

Substitute goalkeeper Luke Steele saved the vital final penalty as The Reds won 10-9 on spot kicks to book their place in the next round.

Eogahn O'Connell gave the League Two side a shock lead before Forest were reduced to ten men on the half-hour after Jordan Smith's straight red card. They came up against a resolute Shakers' defence until Matty Cash fired home in injury time to take the match to a penalty shoot-out.

Aitor Karanka made 11 changes to the side which defeated Reading on Saturday, handing Forest debuts to new signings Sam Byram and Michael Hefele as well as academy graduate Ryan Yates, and first starts for the club to Jack Robinson and Hillal Soudani.

It was a horrible start to the game for The Reds as they found themselves behind within two minutes. A free kick from the left-hand side by Jay O'Shea was met by the arriving O'Connell who flicked a header past the stranded Jordan Smith from six-yards out to give the League Two side a shock lead.

The Reds came out and went in search of an immediate leveller, with Matty Cash having an effort blocked from inside the area on 11 and Hefele heading over from close range from the second ball.

Cash had an even better chance on 25 as Diogo Goncalves's pin-point cross from the left found him at the back post, only for the Forest man to nod his header wide of the target.

Forest's task got even harder just after the half-hour mark when Jordan Smith was shown his marching orders. Bury forward Dominic Telford – who may not have been on the pitch after clashing with Michael Dawson minutes earlier – was played through on goal and Smith rushed out but brought him down outside the area, resulting in him receiving an early bath.

Soudani was the man to make way to allow Luke Steele to come on for his Forest debut in goal but despite being a man light, The Reds were still on the front foot.

Bury were defending resolutely and preventing any clear-cut chances, with Hefele meeting a corner into the box just before half-time but it deflecting over the crossbar.

The introduction of Ben Osborn from the bench at half-time, replacing Yates, saw The Reds revert to a back three of Dawson, Robinson and Hefele, and it was the German who set his sighters 30 yards from goal on 50 minutes but saw his drilled effort flash over the crossbar.

Byram drilled a low ball across the face of goal but no one could get a telling touch on it before a lucky ricochet allowed Gold Omotayo to get in down the right for the visitors, only for his low cross to be too far in front of Telford in the middle.

With 22 minutes left on the clock, Matty Cash did superbly well to keep an Osborn cross alive at the back post but Daryl Murphy could only head over the bar and on 87 a thunderous free kick from Osborn forced keeper Joe Murphy to tip the ball away as it arrowed towards the top corner.

The Reds poured forward and their pressure told in injury time as Cash levelled the scores. Bury were only able to half-clear a corner and the ball came to Cash on the right. He controlled and fired low and hard through the legs of Murphy and into the back of the net.

The Reds could have won it a minute later as Hefele rose highest from a ball into the box and headed down against the foot of the post as the sides couldn't be separated as penalty kicks loomed.

The spot kicks were very impressive as both sides converted all of their initial five penalties, then Matty Cash saw his effort saved. Luke Steele returned the favour, stopping Tom Miller's effort to keep The Reds in the contest before it came all the way back around.

Joe Lolley stepped up for the second time to convert, but goalscorer O'Connell saw his second penalty saved by Steele to see Forest progress into the second round.
