Nottingham Forest manager Aitor Karanka said his side showed they are a very good team as they dumped Premier League side Newcastle out of the Carabao Cup.
Goals from Daryl Murphy, Matty Cash and Gil Dias secured their progress and Karanka was delighted with his side’s showing.
Speaking after the game, he said: “The team, as I said yesterday, deserved a good performance. Today has been clear that when we play our football, we are a very good team.
“I didn’t say anything because I didn’t like the excuses, but I could feel what was happening in the games in the league were normal. Today we showed that without the pressure of the league we are a very good team and now we have to learn to be ourselves and take that pressure off.
“It is easy for me to understand, when you play with pressure and when you play without pressure. We played without the pressure because it was a cup game and we didn’t have to win three points.
“We went to the pitch thinking about the game. When we go into the games in the league I felt that the players felt that pressure, and today was good to know that when we play our style we are a very good team.”
Karanka admits that he now has a very difficult team selection to make when The Reds return to league action at Brentford on Saturday.
“Yes and it is good,” he said. “Everybody needs to understand that it is not going to be easy for me. The performance of Bridcutt was amazing, a player who hasn’t played one game and who hasn’t been in the team and when he gets the first chance to play he did his best.
“He is training every day and that is the spirit I want in the team.”
