Focus on a good performance

19 September 2017

Mark Warburton says the focus for Nottingham Forest will be to put in a good performance against Premier League champions Chelsea on Wednesday night.

Forest travel to Stamford Bridge for the Carabao Cup tie and Warburton believes if The Reds put in a good performance, it will give them a chance of getting a result.

He said: "A good performance has to be our focus; if we go there and deliver a performance, then we have gone there and done what we do well and we will be in good shape. To look at what we have practised and rehearsed and if we can deliver that in that setting, that will be progress for us.

"It is two teams playing football; it would be ridiculous of me to say we will go there and beat Chelsea. We will be well prepared with our squad of players looking to deliver a strong performance. If any team does that then they will be OK.

"A win would be another statement and a building block in terms of belief, unity and confidence within the squad but a good performance is more important. That is key for us as you want to go to venues of this stature and deliver a good performance and not be overawed."

Warburton has assembled a youthful squad and he knows that tomorrow night will be another learning curve in their development.

He said: "We are a strong, Championship team with some outstanding professionals but we are talking about a team with some world-class talents in their ranks. The Premier League is a fantastic division with lots of wealth that allows you to assemble a squad like that and everyone aspires to get to that level.

"It is great experience for our squad. We went to Newcastle, which was a tough draw, a great experience and more learning for the younger players, and tomorrow likewise. It is another learning night for us; we go there full of respect but we look to play and deliver a performance. The young players will benefit from it and the older players who have been there before will enjoy it."
