Nottingham Forest Under 18s moved to the top of the Professional Development League with a comfortable 3-0 win over Barnsley on Saturday afternoon.
With joint-leaders Sheffield United seeing their game postponed due to a frozen pitch, Forest knew that a victory would take them to the summit and provide the perfect response to their FA Youth Cup exit in midweek.
There were opportunities for both sides in the opening exchanges but it was Forest who were able to make the breakthrough on 32 minutes as Kyle McClean stepped up to convert a penalty after Arvian Appiah had been brought down inside the box.
Gareth Holmes's side were on top at the beginning of the second half but it took them until 65 minutes to double their lead. Jake Taylor got on the end of a precise pass through the middle of the Barnsley defence and was able to slot the ball calmly past Jake Greatorex.
Forest then made the points safe with 19 minutes remaining as a quick free-kick was rifled into the back of the net by Brennan Johnson as The Reds put the gloss on an impressive display at The Nigel Doughty Academy.
The latest victory extends Forest's winning run in the league to three matches and they will be aiming to continue that sequence when they travel to Leeds United on Saturday (21 January) for an 11am kick-off.
Forest: J. Wright, Willetts, Re, C. Smith, Jemson, Harbottle (Stewart 74'), Appiah (En-Neyah 69'), Taylor, McClean (Dekel 80'), Johnson, McCormick
