Match preview: Barnsley (H)

1 January 2017

Nottingham Forest welcome Barnsley to The City Ground for the Sky Bet Championship clash on Monday 2 January (kick-off 3pm).

Nottingham Forest will be aiming to get 2017 up and running with a victory over Barnsley at The City Ground and also get some more points on the board after two tough away defeats to Huddersfield and Newcastle.

The Reds had a chance to get a result at St James' Park until Matt Mills' second yellow card saw Forest reduced to 10 men, and head coach Philippe Montanier will be aiming to carry that performance into the New Year for the visit of Barnsley.

The Tykes have been on a great run of form, winning four of their first five games in December to lift them to within touching distance of the play-off spots and they ended the year with a 2-2 draw at home to Birmingham on New Year's Eve.

Michael Mancienne is set to return having missed the match at Newcastle through suspension, but Matt Mills will sit the game out after being sent off at St James' Park. David Vaughan could return to the starting line-up after dropping to the bench against Newcastle, while Britt Assombalonga will be pushing for a starting role as he continues to build his match sharpness.

Winger Adam Hammill is set to return after completing a three-match suspension against Birmingham on New Year's Eve and Aidy White is pushing to be included after being out with a long-term injury. Marc Roberts will be missing for Barnsley though after being sent off against Birmingham.

Conor Hourihane

Irish central midfielder Conor Hourihane is the man that makes Barnsley tick. After assuming the captain's armband last season, Hourihane led his side to promotion via the play-offs as well as success in the Johnstone's Paint Trophy final at Wembley.

Blessed with strong technical ability, his early season form saw him called into the Republic of Ireland squad and he will be hoping to carry on lifting The Tykes up the table.

Barnsley defender Angus MacDonald, speaking after the draw with Birmingham, said: "I think with 11 men we'd go onto win it but sadly Robbo now misses a game but the lads dug in with 10 men and got the point in the end.

"Losing a man is always going to be difficult. It was a bit harsh given that they've changed the rules, but it's the referee's decision at the end of the day and we can't change that.

"We had better chances in the second half than in the first half and we take the positives from it and go into Monday ready to beat Nottingham Forest."
