Under 23s: Forest 1-1 Leicester

24 February 2017

A late goal from Leicester City denied Nottingham Forest Under 23s all three points in their final Premier League Cup game this evening.

A third-minute strike from Virgil Gomis was almost enough to earn The Reds a second victory and clean sheet of the week but Alex Pascanu scrambled the ball home with a minute to play to earn The Foxes a share of the spoils.

It was the visitors who came out of the traps quicker as Layton Ndukwu hit the far post with a drilled strike from just inside the penalty area but Forest soon made them pay for that miss as they went in front.

A superb right-wing cross from Choz Charlesworth was inch-perfect for Gomis inside the box and the French striker was able to tap home from close range to put The Reds ahead with only three minutes played.

Some good interplay between Gomis and Anthony Wright almost doubled the advantage ten minutes later. Gomis slipped a reverse pass behind the back four into Wright's pass but he fired agonisingly wide of the far post.

Leicester had responded well to falling behind and had two opportunities to level after the half-hour mark. Ndukwu sent a shot over the crossbar from inside the area before Josh Gordon fired into the side netting after beating Damien Perquis in the air.

The final chance of the half also fell the way of the visitors. A powerful strike from Admiral Muskwe hit substitute Kairo Mitchell inside the six-yard box and although Jordan Wright had to change direction, he held on to the ball.

Forest came inches away from taking a two-goal lead midway through the second half. Aaron Smith's shot was blocked into the path of Adam Crookes but his effort went inches over the bar from the edge of the box.

Chances came and went for the visitors as no-one was there to turn home a perfect left-wing cross from Ndukwu before the same man shot into the side netting after latching on to Gordon's flicked header.

With only a minute of normal time remaining, Leicester eventually got the goal their pressure had deserved as defender Pascanu was on hand to turn the ball into the net from point-blank range after a free-kick from Ndukwu.
