Nottingham Forest Under 23s head coach Gareth Holmes was delighted with the team’s performance in the convincing 4-0 win over Hull City at The City Ground.
Goals from Nicolao Dumitru, Gboly Ariyibi, Toby Edser and Anel Ahmedhodzic sealed the win and Holmes was pleased with the performance of the senior pros.
He said: “I am really pleased. I think we dominated possession and our movement off the ball was good. It was a strong performance with a strong team.
“The pleasing thing is the boys have gone about it in the right manner and the senior pros have stood up to that and made sure that they use it for what it is - to get their fitness and be in a position to help the first team moving forwards.
“Ideally what you are looking for is competition for places in the 23s, so then the people who are doing well are in a real competitive vein of form ready to go in and be available for selection for Gary and Jack.
“Credit to them they have gone about it in the right way with some good passages of play and good movement and what is also pleasing is we have got the four goals but also kept the clean sheet which shows the resilience that will stand us in good stead moving forward.”
The match also saw a return to action for Armand Traore and Chris Cohen after injury and Holmes felt the pair did well on their comebacks.
He said: “You know what you are talking about with Chris. He is a long-serving member of the club, an excellent professional and is someone the young players can look up to. His attitude and his hunger for the game is second to none and it is a real positive to have him back in the frame.
“With Armand it is another option that Gary has at his disposal and I think both will say they have got to get match fit and today will go a long way to addressing that.”
