Under 23s: Crystal Palace 1-2 Forest

29 August 2017

Nottingham Forest Under 23s made it two wins from two as Arvin Appiah’s injury-time goal sealed a 2-1 win against Crystal Palace.

Gerry McDonagh put The Reds in front at Selhurst Park before Freddie Ladapo equalised in the second half but substitute Appiah had the final say with virtually the last kick of the ball.

McDonagh was denied by Palace keeper Dion-Curtis Henry on 18 minutes but the striker broke through a couple of minutes later, latching onto a through ball to poke past the stopper.

The home side, who featured several senior players in their line-up, had a goal rule out as Michael Phillips was flagged offside on the half-hour mark and both sides came close to finding the net just after the break.

Aaron Smith’s teasing cross hit the base of the Palace post and Ladapo struck the upright from Kian Flanagan’s pass but the Palace frontman wasn’t to be denied again as he levelled the match on 62.

Levi Lumeka, on as a half-time substitute, unselfishly squared the ball for Ladapo who calmly slotted home from close range.

The Reds defended resolutely and were counting their lucky stars once again as Lumeka hit the post and then the winger had an effort rule out for offside in injury time.

But Jack Lester’s side showed fantastic character to race up the other end after that disallowed goal and sub Appiah finished neatly past Henry to seal a brilliant three points.
