Danny Fox said the Nottingham Forest players dug deep but fully-deserved their extra-time win against Newcastle United in the Carabao Cup.
The defender was delighted to progress in the competition and is eager to build a winning mentality at the club.
He said: "The boys dug in and the gaffer made a few changes which shows we have great strength in depth. I think we should have won in the 90 minutes, especially with the chances we created in the first half and with Jason hitting the bar.
"I think we deserved it and we showed a lot of character to come back after going 1-0 down after only a few minutes and then for them to score right before half time. We dug in and got the job done and now we are in the next round."
Mark Warburton made six changes to the side for the game at St James' Park and Fox believes having good competition for places can be key throughout the season.
He said: "I am glad for the lads that have come in and done well and it shows that we have good competition for places. We have some big games coming up and it is a big season with a lot of games so the more players we have at our disposal the better we will be.
"It is a good headache for the manager to have. I am delighted for Tyler especially as he has worked hard all pre-season; he has been on loan a few times and had a bit of an injury-ravaged season last season but he has come in and worked really hard and he has taken his chance. All of the subs were great, Hobbsy as well and I am delighted for him. He was disappointed not to be starting but to come on and show the professionalism that he did and he contributed in getting the winner.
"We now have a big game Saturday against Leeds who are doing particularly well at the minute and we are looking forward to that and hopefully we can get another three points."
