It's about the fine margins

4 April 2017

Nottingham Forest manager Mark Warburton said it was the fine margins that proved to be the difference in the defeat against Wolves.

The Reds nearly took the lead moments before Wolves struck the decisive goal and Warburton was left rueing what might have been in a game which he felt his side deserved a point.

He said: “It is about the fine margins. We spoke about it before the game and after the game; you go from the best chance in the game to put it in the back of the net and go one up, to ten or 12 seconds later you are one down.

“Even right at the death I thought Muzzy did enough to get the ball over and these are the fine margins. Goals change games as basic as that may sound. We didn’t play at our best tonight, far from it. I think we were at about 65 per cent tonight. We still moved the ball and when we did we hurt them, we have to take our rewards.

“It was a big chance; it fell sweetly for the goalkeeper and we then have men caught the wrong side of the ball and we are punished. It was a bitter pill to swallow because despite not being at our best, I thought we did enough to get a point out of the game.

“I am not worried about possession if it is not incisive and penetrative and hurting them in the final third. We have got to be brave at the back; we went long too early, too easily and gave the ball away cheaply. We didn’t take care of the ball enough and it hurts to lose in that manner.”

Warburton made three changes to his side, all in defence, and he was pleased with what he saw from the players that came into the side.

He said: “I was pleased we made some changes tonight as we have a tough schedule. It is important to see how Matt and Armand were, Michael stepping in at right back shows that we have cover in places. I was delighted that Chris and David saw out the 90 and people put a shift in all over the park.

“It is about showing faith in the squad. You can’t come into a club as a new manager and talk about using the squad and not do it. Joe has been outstanding and I have been delighted with Eric and Dani and it shows that we have options.”
