Nottingham Forest Under 23s were beaten in their opening Central League Cup game this afternoon as they went down 2-1 at Shrewsbury Town.
Jack Lester fielded a young side at Greenhous Meadow as The Reds aimed to end their four-game winless run but they were beaten despite a late strike from Virgil Gomis.
Forest saw early opportunities fall to trialist Tim Michaels and Aaron Smith while goalkeeper Chris Marques had to be alert at the other end to deny the experienced Sylvan Ebanks-Blake from opening the scoring.
The two teams went into the interval still deadlocked but Andy Mangan did give the home side the lead 11 minutes into the second half as the former Fleetwood Town and Tranmere Rovers man headed the ball home past Marques.
The Shrews doubled their advantage with 18 minutes to play. Substitute Tyrone Ofori came on and made an instant impact, slotting the ball past Marques from inside the area to put the home side in control.
Gomis pulled a goal back with just one minute of normal time remaining but, despite some late pressure, Forest suffered defeat and will hope for a better result in another cup competition, the Premier League Cup, at Brighton on Saturday (kick-off 2pm).
