Nottingham Forest head coach Philippe Montanier was happy with the ‘physical, tactical and technical’ test his young team were given last night.
The Reds beat Port Vale 2-0 courtesy of goals from Matt Mills and Britt Assombalonga, but the pair were joined in the starting line-up by several academy players.
And Montanier said after the game that he used the match as a chance to assess the junior members of his squad.
He told Forest Player HD: “We had a young team today and it was an opportunity for me to see more of them. The second objective was to give some of them 90 minutes.
“We are happy to win the game, and that will always be the objective even in friendlies, but it was a physical, tactical and technical objective too and that was tough for my young players.”
Montanier admits that he is still pondering his preferred line-up, with the prospect of players recovering from injury and new signings coming into his starting 11 for the visit of Burton Albion on the opening day of the Sky Bet Championship season.
He said: “It’s too early at the moment. I don’t have a lot of choice but that gives the young players an opportunity to show their qualities.
“The market is not easy and we have to be patient to recruit good players for the squad. We have different targets but it’s too early to announce anything.”
