Nottingham Forest have signed experienced defender Damien Perquis on a free transfer.
The 32-year-old centre back, who has signed a two-year deal, racked up a number of appearances in the French and Spanish top flights with Sochaux and Real Betis before most recently playing for Toronto in the MLS.
Perquis, who was born in France but plays for Poland at international level, began his career with hometown team Troyes, progressing through their academy and becoming a first-team regular.
His talent was spotted by Ligue 1 side Saint-Etienne, for whom he made more than 30 appearances before being loaned to Sochaux.
It was there that he really found his feet, impressing enough to earn a permanent transfer in 2008, going on to make nearly 150 appearances for the club and playing every minute of Poland’s Euro 2012 finals campaign.
After the tournament, Perquis signed for Betis and made his debut as a substitute in a 1-0 La Liga win over Espanyol. A fractured jaw sustained in an unfortunate collision against Malaga in 2013 halted his progress briefly, but he nevertheless departed Spain for Canada with considerable experience under his belt.
His arrival in Toronto last January presented regular first-team opportunities, with Perquis proving himself a dependable figure at the heart of their defence before agreeing his departure earlier this month.
Perquis joins fellow new arrival Thomas Lam in competing with the likes of Matt Mills and Jack Hobbs for a place in Philippe Montanier’s defence.
