A familiar face

20 July 2016

Nottingham Forest defender Thomas Lam says former team-mate Lars Veldwijk has been easing his transition into Nottingham life.

Veldwijk spent last season on loan at Dutch top-flight side PEC Zwolle, where he played alongside Lam, and the pair were reunited earlier this month when the defender signed for Forest.

For Lam, who was born in the Netherlands but represents Finland, this is his first permanent move to foreign shores and with accommodation, bank accounts and much more to arrange, Veldwijk’s presence has helped him settle in.

Speaking after playing 45 minutes in last night’s friendly at Port Vale, Lam said: “Lars Veldwijk has helped me and my team-mates have been very nice – everything’s great at the moment.

“[The move here] was quite quick. I got a call from my agent on the Monday and he told me Forest were interested, which felt good.

“I told him I wanted to go, we discussed it for five days, came out and now I’m here – so I’m happy.

“There are good people around here and the city is also nice.”

Lam has now played a number of friendlies in England and admits he needs to get used to the change in style.

He said: “It’s another game to what we play in Holland – more physical and there are more duels.

“In Holland we play more on the ground, but this is another style of play and I have to work on it. I need time but in a couple of months I think I’ll be ready.

I want to develop myself, grow in the team, get in the first 11, play as many games as I can and help take the club to a better level than last year.”
