Nottingham Forest Under 23s ended the calendar year on a disappointing note as they slipped to a 6-3 defeat against Sheffield United this afternoon.
Goals from Rob Worrall, Ben Brereton and Lewis Walters were not enough to prevent Jack Lester's side from being beaten at Stocksbridge Park Steels' ground as their six-game unbeaten run was brought to an end.
The game had started well for Forest as Worrall slotted them into a fourth-minute lead but an own goal from Adam Crookes and a strike from Blades defender Sam Graham turned the game on its head in a matter of minutes.
Lester's men were then stunned by a blitz from the home side before half-time as goals from Graham Kelly, David Brooks and Jake Wright made it 5-1 to the Yorkshiremen at the interval.
Brereton pulled a goal back early in the second half but United restored their four-goal advantage almost straight away as Brooks completed a superb run with a fine finish to beat Chris Marques in the Forest goal.
Reds substitute Lewis Walters scored a late consolation with a close-range finish before Brereton missed a late penalty to give the scoreline some more respectability as Forest ended 2016 with a tough defeat in Yorkshire.
