Nottingham Forest's Under 18s were beaten 3-2 in their first game of the season at Colchester United on Saturday afternoon.
The Reds had won six and drawn one of their seven pre-season games and started brightly in Essex, taking the lead through Virgil Gomis after only four minutes following some smart build-up play in midfield.
Gareth Holmes' side continued to dominate the first half and created several goalscoring opportunities but would rue those missed chances as the home side levelled shortly after the interval.
With 15 minutes remaining, Forest went back in front thanks to a superb piece of individual play from Arvin Appiah and it looked as if that strike would be enough to give The Reds all three points.
Colchester weren't done though and were able to score twice in the final ten minutes of the contest to take the victory and leave Holmes disappointed but still positive about the games to come.
He said: "The game will act as a good learning curve for the young players and remind them of the importance of staying professional throughout the 90 minutes. We let Colchester back in through some naive play but we will improve as the season goes on."
