Match preview: Burton Albion (H)

5 August 2016

Nottingham Forest and Burton Albion meet in a competitive fixture for the first time tomorrow as the two sides go head-to-head at The City Ground (kick-off 3pm).

The opening day of the season is an exciting time for supporters of all clubs and there is plenty of optimism for fans of Nottingham Forest and Burton Albion ahead of the first meeting between the clubs tomorrow.

It will be a day of firsts at The City Ground as Philippe Montanier takes charge of his first competitive fixture after being appointed as The Reds' new head coach in the summer and Burton play their first-ever game in the Championship.

There will be a familiar face in the away dugout as former Forest striker Nigel Clough leads Burton Albion leads the visitors and he will hope their momentum can continue after finishing as League One runners-up in the last campaign.

Forest defender Danny Fox is suspended for the first three games of the campaign following his red card at MK Dons on the final day of last season so Chris Cohen or Alex Iacovitti could deputise for the left back.

Cohen faces a race against time to be fit for the game after limping off last weekend but new signing Pajtim Kasami could be in contention to play after signing on loan from Olympiacos in midweek.

Burton boss Nigel Clough hopes to have a fully-fit squad for tomorrow but does have a number of injury concerns over players including Chris O'Grady, Lee Williamson, Tom Flanagan and Callum Reilly.

Lucas Akins

Akins scored 12 times last season as Burton Albion were promoted from League One including an impressive hat-trick as The Brewers won 3-0 at Colchester United towards the end of the campaign.

He has finished as the club's top scorer in the last two campaigns, is a hugely-popular figure with the Albion supporters and will be a threat to our defence tomorrow afternoon.

Nigel Clough: “It's always special going back to the City Ground, having watched them for nine years then having played for them for another nine. It’s a club that will always be special to me and my family.

“We are not sure what to expect from them under the new management team, we know they have a quality side on paper. It all depends on how much of a mark he will have been able to put on them in pre-season.

“It could be an advantage as they may not be settled but the downside of that, we have not seen what their play will be like. You could say they are an unknown quantity going into the game.”
