First-half goals from Tyler Walker and Jorge Grant earned Nottingham Forest’s Under 21s a 2-1 win over Coventry City this afternoon.
The visitors handed starts to former Premier League striker Simeon Jackson and ex West Ham, Bradford and Colchester winger Blair Turgott.
And it was the latter who claimed the first shot on target, Turgott stinging Dimitar Evtimov’s hands with a half-volley from the edge of the area.
It was Forest who took the lead, however, following good build up play between Grant and Jack Kelly.
The latter squared the ball low for Walker to tap it home from close range on 32 minutes.
And it was 2-0 on the stroke of half-time when Grant fired the ball home from the edge of the area after Walker had latched on to a long ball over the top from Roger Riera.
The two sides exchanged chances early in the second half, Walker drawing a save from Coventry keeper Reice Charles-Cook before Kieran Fenton had to make a goal-line clearance to prevent the Luke Armstrong from scoring.
But The Reds’ lead was halved when George Thomas pulled the ball back for Jack Finch to fire it home.
Both Walker and Derrick Otim sent shots off target before Turgott forced a good save from Evtimov with a well-struck 25-yard free-kick.
It was an open affair as the game neared its conclusion. Kelly was able to take the ball all the way along the left flank, beating Ivor Lawton with a drop of the shoulder before firing it straight at Charles-Cook.
Evtimov was then called in to make two saves in quick succession as Coventry looked to score from a corner. But the visitors could find no way through and had to settle for a 2-1 defeat.
