Strength and pace

1 April 2015

Nottingham Forest manager Dougie Freedman says Chuba Akpom will bring ‘strength and pace’ to The Reds’ front line.

Akpom commenced training with his new team-mates this week after joining on loan from Arsenal until the end of the season.

And, while he accepts his new signing isn’t yet the finished article, Freedman is confident Akpom has all the attributes to be a success on Trentside.

The manager said: “He’s a willing kid who threatens defences in behind, which is good for the team as it gives us space to operate in midfield. He’s got fantastic strength and pace.

“He’s got a good goalscoring record in youth teams – I’ve watched him since he was 15 years of age.

“He’s here to work with the team, mature as a player and person, and hopefully get some goals.”

Forest competed with a number of clubs for Akpom’s signature and Freedman praised all parties involved for getting the deal done.

He said: “I must congratulate the staff behind the scenes at the football club. We worked extremely hard to talk to Arsenal, talk to the boy and fight off a lot of competition.

“Arsenal were fantastic in this. They gave us a player for a lot less money than other teams were going to pay because of the game time we could give him, and hopefully my experience of developing younger players at previous clubs helped along the way.

“If it does work out it will give us an advantage next season in getting players. Other managers might say ‘It’s not a bad club to send them to – a big stadium, a well-supported team with a manager that likes to coach and develop.’”
