Nottingham Forest's Under 21s moved a step closer to securing a home play-off semi-final as Alex Iacovitti's goal gave them a 1-0 win at Birmingham City this afternoon.
Jimmy Gilligan's men were intent on responding to their 2-1 defeat at Huddersfield Town on Friday in the best possible fashion and Matty Cash hit the crossbar with a 25-yard strike with 15 minutes on the clock.
Tim Erlandsson once again made the step up from Under 18 level to take his place between the sticks and he had to be alert to midway through the first half to palm away a low drive from Viv Solomon-Otabor.
Birmingham striker Matt Green cleared the bar with a 25-yard volley shortly before half-time while Erlandsson was called into action after the interval to keep out Neal Eardley's stinging attempt.
After Oliver Burke missed the target with a header three minutes from the end, Forest may have thought their chance of victory had gone but Iacovitti was on hand to head home a short corner on 89 minutes to hand The Reds a vital win.
The result means Forest can seal a home play-off semi-final by beating nearest rivals Huddersfield Town at The Nigel Doughty Academy on Monday afternoon (kick-off 2pm).
