Nottingham Forest’s Under 18s returned to winning ways on Saturday with a 1-0 victory over Derby County at The Nigel Doughty Academy. After successive defeats to Derby and Coventry in the last two weeks, Jimmy Gilligan’s side were eager to get back on track with three points against The Rams.
And The Reds did just that thanks to Gerry McDonaugh’s strike 12 minutes from time to secure an impressive win against a strong Derby side.
Oliver Burke curled in a pinpoint free-kick onto the head of David Arrowsmith and although the Derby goalkeeper produced an excellent save, McDonaugh was on hand to head the rebound home.
And Academy Manager Gary Brazil was delighted with the way in which the team responded following their recent defeats and was impressed with the standard of the performance.
He said: “We played a fairly young side which included a few Under 16 players. Some of the football we played was excellent and Gerry McDonaugh reacted superbly to take his goal.
“The lads are now beginning to produce some of the results which their football deserves and I’m really pleased with the direction in which the Academy is going.”
