Nottingham Forest striker Simon Cox says yesterday's 4-0 win at Ilkeston was excellent preparation ahead of The Reds' pre-season trip to Portugal.
The victory at The New Manor Ground was played out in sweltering conditions and Cox, who bagged two goals in the win, believes the squad will only benefit from the run-out.
He told Forest Player: "It was a really good workout for us. It was very warm out there but that is pre-season for you. Everyone got 45 minutes so, all in all, it was a good day.
"We knew Ilkeston would present us with a good, physical challenge. We come here every year and every year it is a tough test but we know it is good for us.
"It was all about getting fitness for us and making sure we work hard so that we're prepared for the first game of the season."
The Irishman formed a notable partnership with new signing Lars Veldwijk in the second half and he says the wealth of attacking talents available to manager Stuart Pearce will only serve to help them as individuals.
He said: "Lars is the kind of guy that I love to play off of. He's big and takes a lot of the attention away from me so hopefully throughout pre-season we get to strike up a good partnership.
"There'll be competition for places in this team but that can only be a positive thing. It will be healthy competition, we'll be pushing each other and helping each other be better players."
