Rotherham 1-0 Forest

23 July 2014

New signings Jack Hunt and Michael Mancienne were both handed starts in this evening’s friendly against Rotherham United.

The pair played at right back and centre back respectively as Forest suffered a 1-0 defeat, Kieran Agard the scorer.

Danny Fox partnered Mancienne, with Dan Harding at left back. Greg Halford and Ben Osborn occupied the deep midfield area with Andy Reid ahead of them and Jamie Paterson and Jamie Mackie on the left and right wings. Simon Cox started alone up front.

Forest’s first shot of the game came from Osborn, who saw his 12th-minute effort from 20 yards blocked.

Halford was next to have a go, collecting the ball after Paterson’s cross has been headed away, skipping away from a Rotherham man and sending it a couple of yards over the bar with his left foot.

The Reds had been largely in control but their hosts threatened three times before the break.

Michael Tidser’s 30th-minute effort drew Darlow’s first save of note, the keeper pushing the ball away comfortably, before Tidser saw a shot deflect off a Forest shirt and just past the post.

Alex Revell headed the ball just wide from Ben Pringle’s subsequent corner and the sides went into the break level.

Stuart Pearce made one change at the break, replacing Jamie Paterson with trialist Sancidino Silva.

The first chance of the half fell for the hosts as Revell worked his way down the left before pulling the ball back for Ryan Hall. The substitute could only fire the ball wide.

A swathe of Forest substitutions followed as Radi Majewski, Louis Laing, Stephen McLaughlin and David Vaughan replaced Reid, Hunt, Mackie and Halford.  Shortly after play resumed Cox was unfortunate not to score with a neat flick at the near post after latching on to Osborn’s low cross.

But it was the hosts who took the lead on 65 minutes when Pringle found Agard with an excellent through ball, allowing the forward to finish neatly beyond Darlow.

Majewski set about restoring parity, sending the ball wide from 20 yards, before McLaughlin rattled the crossbar after picking the ball up inside the area with 15 minutes to go.

Lars Veldwijk and Tyler Walker were the next Reds substitutes to take to the field, replacing Cox and Osborn, and Veldwijk came within inches of equalising with five minutes to go.

The Dutchman latched on to Harding’s brilliant cross from deep, heading the ball across goal and off the inside of the post. The ball bobbled across the line and was cleared away.

Danny Collins was next to take the field, in place of Mancienne, and there were no further chances at The New York Stadium.
