Nottingham Forest’s Under 18s recorded a valuable point on Saturday following a 1-1 draw with Crewe Alexandra at The Nigel Doughty Academy. The Reds took the lead with only ten minutes remaining following some good link-up play between Jermaine Worthington, Tyler Walker and Luke Thomas. After a lung-bursting run from full back, Worthington was able to pull the ball back from the by-line where Walker was on hand to slot home.
An elusive win avoided Forest’s grasp in the final minute though as Crewe won and converted a last-gasp penalty to leave Academy Manager Gary Brazil disappointed but also proud of his players’ display.
He said: “We did a lot of preparation ahead of the game and it paid off. We got the ball forward earlier and looked to exploit our pace to get in behind Crewe’s back four.
“We created a number of chances but could only take one. Then we just fell short of holding on by conceding the penalty in the last minute. That was frustrating but I was really pleased with the performance and the boys can learn a lot from the game.
“They are starting to learn that there are many different ways to hurt the opposition. We showed a really good desire to improve our game on Saturday and we’ll carry that on in our games against Sheffield United and Brentford later this week.”
