A Tough Night

5 February 2014

Nottingham Forest manager Billy Davies expressed his delight at seeing his side seal a place in the FA Cup with Budweiser fifth round following a 2-0 win at Preston North End.

Jamie Mackie’s first-half goal was added to late on by Darius Henderson but the Reds manager admitted that the performance did not match his expectations on a wet and wild night at Deepdale.

The Reds boss said: “The home team, in my opinion, deserved to win tonight but all that matters is we’re through to the next round. We’ve had plenty of games this season that we’ve dominated and not won and it was the opposite tonight.

“Our play wasn’t quite up to the standards that we set at this football club but in cup football, the result is the most important thing. Preston are an excellent side and I’m delighted with the result this evening.”

Despite the horrendous conditions in Lancashire, Forest were able to seal with win with two superb strikes and the Reds boss was thrilled to see two of his front men get on the scoresheet.

He said: “The two goals were exceptional from Jamie and Hendo. They both showed great composure to score in difficult conditions and with players closing them down.

“We know Sheffield United will pose a great threat just as Preston did but that is in the weeks to come. We now go away, we prepare for the game at Blackpool on Saturday and we keep ticking the games off as they come along.”
