Chairman's Column: Birmingham

19 April 2014

Good afternoon everybody and a very warm welcome to the representatives of Birmingham City for this afternoon’s Sky Bet Championship match at The City Ground.

I think we all found last weekend’s defeat at Queens Park Rangers tough to take. We recovered well after a poor start and at one stage looked the more likely team to win. Sadly it wasn’t to be, and we must now defy the odds if we are to reach the playoffs.

In situations like this, however, my ‘fan’ mind-set often takes over. When it comes to the success of this great football club I am eternally optimistic, and in Gary Brazil and the team I still believe we have the necessary quality and experience to pull off something special.

Should that not be the case, however, it is certainly no time to panic. Since becoming chairman and owner in July 2012 I have been steadily laying the foundations of this club to give it the best possible chance of long-term success. You only have to look at our squad – and subsequently our misfortune in losing so many key players to injury – to see we are close to achieving our goal of returning to the Premier League. We may have to wait another year for that dream to become a reality, but we all know it will be worth it.

On a separate note, I was delighted to hear Tuesday’s open day was a success. Unfortunately I was unable to attend but, having seen pictures and footage, it appeared to be an enjoyable day for supporters young and old. I am keen to organise more events like this in the future to continue bringing our fans closer to the club.

Come on you Reds.

Supporters unable to attend this afternoon’s match are reminded they can download the official matchday magazine to their iPad. Hard copies will be available from all the usual outlets around The City Ground.
