Chosen Charity For Middlesbrough

12 September 2013

Cedar Housing is a local charity which gives homeless young women in Nottinghamshire 'hope for the future and support to get there'.

As a Christian charity, based in Nottingham, Cedar House were established to provide housing, education and support services for vulnerable people affected by homelessness.

Every year hundreds of young women in Nottinghamshire find themselves homeless. In Broxtowe, Rushcliffe and Gedling, some estimates put that number at over 500 a year, but many remain hidden. Often a friend’s sofa is all that stands between them and sleeping on a park bench.

Broken family support networks, personal upheaval, poor diet and risks to personal safety usually lead to ill health, becoming a victim of crime or exploitation and dropping out of education or work.

The charity’s purpose is simple: to take young women out of homelessness and support them towards independent living.

The following quotes have been taken by young women who have received help, support and guidance from Cedar Housing.

"Staying at Cedar has helped me to have a better relationship with my family"

"I have been able to make really good friends and now I have the support I needed. Staying at Cedar House has helped me to become more confident and to understand how to be able to live with the money that I have."

(Without Cedar Housing) "I would worry every day about where I would sleep next, I wouldn't be going to college and I would still be in a very controlling environment."
