Pace and Power

12 October 2013

Nottingham Forest interim head of Academy Gary Brazil has spoken to Forest Player about the physical threat The Reds’ Under 18s side are carrying this season.

Brazil led last season’s group to the semi-finals of the FA Youth Cup but believes his current crop possess a key component which was missing from that campaign.

Brazil said: “What we’ve got this year, which we were probably missing last season, is real pace and power. We have individuals who are exceptionally quick. It’s quite frightening at times.

“We have recently done a lot more fitness testing with the sports science guys and some of the results we’ve had are quite stunning. Getting the most out of that pace on the pitch will be the trick for some of these individuals if they are to go on and get good careers.”

The 18s’ results so far this campaign have been something of a mixed bag, a factor Brazil recognises.

He said: “Consistency will be the key throughout this season. It’s a very young group and at the moment it’s very much a rollercoaster. One week they can look average and on another given day they are very exciting.

“We won by three goals at Leeds earlier in the season and some of the football was excellent. When they do get it right it’s really good to watch.”
