Nottingham Forest defender Jamaal Lascelles admitted he was ‘surprised’ to find himself in the starting 11 for yesterday’s trip to Yeovil Town. The young centre back made his first league start since January 2012 in the absence of injured pair Danny Collins and Kelvin Wilson.
And while Lascelles wasn’t expecting a starting berth, he told Forest Player that he feels his development is going well.
He said: “I was quite surprised that I was starting. I’ve been doing quite well in training and I’m always just waiting for a chance. Playing alongside the likes of Chris Cohen, Jack Hobbs and Eric Lichaj is brilliant. Karl Darlow kept talking to me, which is all you want as a young centre back. I couldn’t ask for anything more.
“My main aim is to keep a regular place in the first team. I can feel myself progressing and I’m getting good feedback from the coaches. I’ve just got to keep working hard and take everything the gaffer says on board because he’s a great manager.”
The game ended in defeat for The Reds but Lascelles insisted that the result has not dampened spirits in the camp.
He said: “On another day we would have scored more. We now have to go into Saturday’s game against Blackpool with our heads held high.”
