18s Show Sheffield Steel

4 November 2013

Nottingham Forest’s Under 18s came from behind to seal a 1-1 draw against Sheffield Wednesday at The Nigel Doughty Academy on Saturday.

The Reds paid the price for missing a penalty as they slipped behind to a first-half goal from The Owls, but Edouard Schoenecker’s strike 19 minutes from time earned the hosts a point.

After a positive start to the game, Forest had the ideal opportunity to take the lead on 35 minutes when Tyler Walker latched onto a through ball from Deimantas Petravicius and was brought down by the Wednesday keeper. Walker took responsibility himself but was denied by a good save.

The sides went into the break level but Forest were undone by a swift counter-attack ten minutes after the restart as, from a Reds corner, The Owls swept down the other end and took the lead.

The spoils were to be shared though. Jake Mulraney produced an excellent left-wing cross on 71 minutes which Schoenecker met inside the box before finishing beyond the goalkeeper.

Interim lead professional development coach Steve Chettle was pleased with his side’s style of play but felt that, based on chances created, it was two points dropped.

He said: “I thought we played well and had the better of both possession and chances. We just couldn’t seem to finish off a resilient Sheffield Wednesday side.

“It is two points dropped considering the opportunities we had but it is also another point closer to where we want to be. We’ll certainly take the positives into our game at Charlton next Saturday.”

Forest: Durrant, Polimos, Worthington, Schoenecker, Karo, Elliott, Adams (Walton 64’), Gnahore, Petravicius, Walker, Mulraney
