Nottingham Forest’s groundstaff have begun the annual process of resurfacing the City Ground pitch. On a beautiful afternoon on Trentside, tractors and other machinery clunked into action as tonnes of turf were ripped up.
Head groundsman Ewan Hunter explained: “The top 15 mm have been taken off – all the top grass and most of the shallow rooting has gone, it’s been stripped right back to the roots.
“100 tonnes of fibre sand, which holds the pitch together and gives it stability, has been added and is going to be power-harrowed tonight. It will then be raked level, the sprinklers will be put back in, the surface will be rolled flat and then seeded.
“It is then a case of fertilising it and keeping it well-watered with a view to the pitch being ready for pre-season.”
