Director of Recruitment and Scouting Keith Burt has hailed the work of the Al Hasawi family after a busy summer at The City Ground.Sean O’Driscoll marked his arrival with no fewer than 11 signings and Burt told Forest Player that many of them had been on the club’s radar for years.
He said: “The players that we brought in weren’t just picked out at random- we’d been scouting them for years. We tried to sign Simon Cox when I worked with Colin Calderwood. The Al-Hasawi family put their hands in their pockets and bought him because he was the one we wanted.
“Billy Sharp had been mooted at this club for two or three years and the family made it happen for us.
“When I worked with Billy [Davies] we tried to get Henri Lansbury but couldn’t for one reason or another. We tried to sign Daniel Ayala from Liverpool and we’ve always watched Sam Hutchinson’s development at Chelsea so, although we had to make eleven signings, we had good knowledge of the players we were going to sign.”
While there can be little substitute for quality, Burt also revealed that the new signings needed to be ‘good characters’.
He said: “There’s a togetherness with this group of players which the supporters can see out there on the pitch. But it’s a long, hard season in the championship and we’ve got a very grounded manager. Let’s see how it goes.”
