Chosen Charity For Hull City

27 November 2012

Jigsaw has been transforming lives in Nottinghamshire since 2000.

They enable local people to get the right support, delivered in the right way, at the right time, to ensure that vulnerable people can live life, their way at home, independent, happy and safe.

They work with client groups who are affected by poverty, disability, chronic social isolation and ill health.  Becoming vulnerable is something that can happen at any time, to anyone.  A crisis like a sudden illness, an accident or bereavement, turns your world upside down.  And if you’ve no one to help, or you don’t know where to go for help, Jigsaw is there for you.   And they support some of the most vulnerable in society - like Dan and Margery.

Dan has no heating, hot water or sanitation.  He copes by spending his days in public buildings to keep warm and he cooks his food on an open fire in the garden.  At night, he stays in one room using the coal fire - his only source of heat.  Winter is coming and the coal is running out.  Jigsaw support workers are alongside Dan helping him to renegotiate his debts to get the utilities back.  Then he can begin to rebuild his life.  Until that happens Dan is in real danger of hypothermia, pneumonia and even death.

Margery is 79 and is chronically lonely.  Because she’s totally alone, she’s unsafe.  Residential care is her only option but she has a much loved pet and wants to remain at home.  It’s a dilemma which we will all face at one time or another.  Jigsaw’s befriending scheme is the largest, free to user service in Nottinghamshire and enables people like Margery to stay at home safely, despite being alone.  The volunteer visits every week to offer company, companionship and friendship.  Before she was matched with her volunteer Margery only had the four walls, the TV and her little dog for company.   This kind of chronic isolation is not only detrimental to Margery’s mental and physical health but it’s costly to local hospital, social care and GP services.
Margery says “I didn’t think anyone cared about me but Kelly cares”
“When you’re in trouble and nobody else will or can’t help, Jigsaw never leaves you on your own.  They give you support to help you through the troubled times.  My life is so much better thanks to Jigsaw.”
Help Jigsaw be there for Margery and Dan who need help today.  And for those who’ll need support tomorrow and beyond.  Donate £10 on
