Nick Marshall has revealed he is unsure what to expect from Nottingham Forest in the FA Youth Cup this season. The Reds launch their cup campaign with a third round tie against Championship rivals Cardiff at The City Ground this evening (kick-off 7pm).
And although Forest’s Under 18s are currently top of their respective division and the club’s Under 21s have recorded five wins in their newly-formed league, Academy Director Marshall is preparing for a step into the unknown.
He told us: “It’s difficult to say that because we’re doing well in the league that it will translate into the cup competition.
“Last season we were struggling in the league but we did terrifically in the cup by reaching the quarter-finals and losing to the eventual winners Chelsea.
“What is going to be happening against Cardiff is that we’re going to be putting together a team that hasn’t really played together because a lot have been playing for the 18s and a lot have been playing for the 21s.
“We just don’t know how players will react, although I would hope that because a lot of the players played in the competition last season nerves shouldn’t be as much of an issue.
“But the fact that we’re putting together a group, like everyone else is doing, and the fact that it’s the youth cup and can have a strange effect on players means just don’t know what you are going to get.”
