Ladies: Derby County 1-0 Nottingham Forest

10 September 2018

Sidney Whitman

Nottingham Forest were condemned to their first defeat of the season on Sunday afternoon as they were beaten 1-0 by Derby County.

A stellar crowd of 1,642 supporters turned out at Pride Park Stadium and despite battling hard, Forest were made to rue missed chances as they were left empty-handed.

Katie Middleton had an early opportunity to give Forest as the in-form striker chased down a weak back-pass from the Derby defence to Leah Kellogg in goal. Middleton then body-blocked the resulting kick from Kellogg but her effort drifted wide.

The Reds had a goal ruled out for offside on 18 minutes following more good work from Middleton. Having escaped the attentions of the Derby goalkeeper she played the ball across to Amy Dicken to tap the ball into the net but the assistant referee's flag was up.

Andi Bell then had two chances in quick succession for the home side as she tested the Forest defence but both of her efforts from distance were wide of the target. Bell then had another opportunity five minutes later but her effort smashed against the side netting of Rebecca Thomas's goal.

Derby struggled to deal with Grace Walters' set-pieces throughout the game and Forest nearly carved another chance to go a goal ahead through a corner. Walters whipped the ball into the box and as Derby scrambled to clear it to safety, Sammy Conroy smashed her effort over the crossbar from inside the box.

The deadlock was broken against the run of play with the last action of the first half as Derby took the lead. Amy Sims rose highest to meet a corner from the right as she headed the ball beyond Thomas to put her side ahead.

The Reds agonisingly missed an opportunity to draw themselves level in the 55th minute. Conroy rose highest to connect with a corner from Walters and flicked her effort back across the face of goal and it narrowly evaded Middleton's boot as it brushed past the post.

Substitute Sophia Bonser was involved next for The Reds as she weaved past several white shirts and charged into the penalty area. Bonser then slipped the ball through to Helena Constantiou but her first touch was heavy and Kellogg collected the ball before she could get a shot away.

Forest took control of the six minutes of stoppage time and threw everything at Derby in attempt to salvage something from the game but as the ball bounced in and out of the penalty area The Reds struggled to get any shots away and were left with nothing to show for their efforts.
